# Meta-Linking
Relations are one of the primary ways of exploring a topic or discovering unexpected connections. This is realized by using the Wikilink-format.
These connections are formed via
- Links in the [[Meta-Data]], e.g. the date of creation, or related [[Meta-Categories types and entities|categories, types or entities]]
- Inline links
- Linking related notes in the footer of a note
If an inline-link is used (often using a display text using the `|`), the original name is added to the related notes in the footer. These are (loosely) listed in order of appearance. To avoid distractions, only the first mention of something related is linked. All other appearances are written as plain-text.
The footer for related topics consists of "sections":
1. **previous**: If the note branches off from another note a link to the previous note is placed here
2. **see** lists connections to related files in the vault
3. **references** lists external sources that were used while creating a note
4. **used in** lists files or notes that emerged from the active note
5. The **Changelog** is used link a major change to a daily note
